Rip 8 - A Solo Canoe

Stats on the Rip 8

STATS

Length: 7''-4"

Width: 32" at sheer

Weight: ~27 pounds

Capacity: 225 pounds

The RIP 8 was designed to showcase that wood boats can look modern and cool.  The hull is a modified JAM design with a deeper vee hull for more load carrying capacity.  It is built of 4 mm Meranti plywood, sheathed on the outside with 6 ounce S glass,  The interior joints are joined with a 4 inch 9 ounce S glass with carbon fiber every third “y” strand.  This cloth was not used for strength, rather to give the look of carbon fiber “knees” in the interior.  The RIP has asymmetric fore and aft decks and a wavy skeg – unique to boats by Synergy.

We often get asked if this a canoe or kayak.   We call it a canoe because it does not have a deck, but it is paddled with a double blade paddle like a kayak.   This design approach was started as an offshoot of the JAM.  Some newer paddlers were intimidated by climbing in the opening of the deck.  Also, paddling on hot days in South Carolina made us wish for a cooler boat.
